What is it?

A Skilled – Recognised Graduate Visa (Subclass 476) is a temporary visa for recent engineering graduates giving you the right to work full time in Australia for 18 months. Your family unit members can also apply to join you in Australia and receive working rights after the visa is granted.

A Path to Permanent Residency: A Skilled Independent Visa (189)

The Skilled Recognised Graduate Visa can also improve your eligibility for a permanent residency via a Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189). Giving you access to Australia’s high minimum wage and ‘free’ health care system and one day even an Australian passport.

To apply for a Skilled Independent Visa, you must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). The EOI provides information that allows you to be ranked against other intending applicants. If you are successful, you will then be invited to apply for a Skilled Independent Visa.

How to get invited: The Points System

To receive an invitation, you must attain score of at least 60 points.

This is what the typical engineering graduate’s points can look like:

  • Age 25-32 = 30pts
  • Bachelor Degree = 15pts
  • Proficient English skills = 10pts
  • Australia’s professional year program or 1 year relevant Aus work experience = 5pts
  • TOTAL of 60pts

Getting a Skilled Recognised Graduate visa means you can spend a year in Australia practicing your English, whilst also gaining work experience by working in Australia to get your last 5 points. If you don’t find work as an engineer you can also complete a professional year in Australia to obtain your last 5 points and will give you more to put on your resume as you search for an engineering job as a permanent resident.
